1st Workshop: Dubrovnik (Croatia)
MARCH 3rd-4th 2008

Dubrovnik workshop is in concordance with activity 1.4 (Mid-term meeting), ant it's purpose is to present associate's thesis regarding review of scientific and professional methodologies and overview of current condition (in the field, science, norms and legislation) with respect to mitigation of seismic risk. There will be approx. 25 participants (from Croatia and Italy) for the workshop. Because of the multidisciplinarity of the issues, visits are planned for project staff and experts from relevant fields dealing with the following subjects: soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering: (European norms, geotechnical data base, liquefaction, slope stability, in situ, field and laboratory testing); rock mechanics (slope stability); engineering geology (hazard zonation, soil/rock properties); seismology; geology and seismotectonics; and GIS database development. In accordance with activity 1.4, common task of all participants is to align research goals and to define details bind to single research projects.

The workshop will mainly focus on new issues in geotechnical and earthquake engineering:
  • Characteristics of investigation area (Zagreb City area, Dubrovnik City area; engineering soil and rock properties)
  • Geotechnical data bases: repositories for hazard zonation (landslide hazard, liquefaction hazard, ground motion hazard, hazard and risk maps)
  • Seismic hazard in urban areas (seismic vulnerability of industrial districts, distributed infrastructures, preservation and structural diagnosis of cultural heritage, monitoring, materials)
  • Application of Eurocode 8 (strategies, legislative, standards, codes, guidelines)

The presentations will be delivered by experts, both from academia and industry, actively working in several fields related to geotechnical and earthquake engineering.

Selected paper will be published in a special issue of journal “RGN zbornik” (citated in: Geobase, Georef, Geotechnical Abstracts, FLUIDEX, Compendex, SCOPU).

The workshop will be hosted by hotel Centre for Advanced Academic Studies (CAAS) in Dubrovnik, Croatia, one of the most beautiful resorts in the Mediterranean sea.
